It’s that time of year again. The time that children dread and parents rejoice - the start of a new school year. Starting a new year at school can bring about many health concerns for children such as increased exposure to germs, stress, back problems from heavy backpacks, and lack of sleep. The good news is there are many ways you can set your child up for success!

  1. Start the day with a healthy breakfast. A breakfast rich in protein and fiber will set your child up well for the morning. For some quick and easy breakfast, ideas click here.

  2. Realign sleep patterns. Your kids have probably started to go asleep and wake up later than they would during the school year. It is a good idea to start a week or two before school getting used to the new schedule so your child is alert and ready to learn at school.

  3. Don’t forget your child's annual physical. This is important for all children but especially those playing sports. You can read more about the benefits here.

  4. Get active. It is critical for your children to learn to live a healthy lifestyle at a young age so they can carry these habits with them for their entire life. Here are some good ways to keep your kids active.

  5. Try to lighten the load. Kids backpacks are often far to heavy for them to be carrying. In fact, the American Chiropractic Association recommends no more than 5-10% of your body weight. Read more on how to aid your child here.
